The River Derg has its source in the Donegal Hills, with moutainous upper stretches flowing from Lough Derg on border of Donegal and Fermanagh. It joins the River Strule to form the Mourne downstream of Newtownstewart, flowing through pasture and arable farm land.

It has good stocks of brown trout and is well known as one of the best waters in Ireland for salmon fishing. The best time to fish in this area is from late May until August. Some fresh water is necessary to encourage runs of fish, however grilse and sea trout will edge upstream without a flood.

Accessibility can be a bit difficult and wading tricky in places, as the river bed consists mainly of large boulders and rocks with deep pools. A wading staff and studded waders are essential.
